| Kelli - Serving on the CSK Committee of the ASA | | | Kelli Hughes Serving Others Every year, the American Library Association (ALA) hosts a 6 day annual conference, with approximately 20,000 librarians in attendance and over 2,500 events. Attendees have an opportunity to participate in community service, browse the exhibit halls, meet popular authors, and attend professional development sessions. And don't forget the bookmobile parade! This year's conference was held June 24-29, 2010 in Washington, D.C. Kelli Hughes has been attending ALA's conferences after becoming a librarian in 2006, and had the chance this year to present on a panel during a concurrent session. Kelli presented along with 2 local colleagues at a session titled "Going Socratic with Coretta Scott King (CSK) Book Award Titles: A Socratic Seminar Approach to Book Discussions." During last summer's ALA conference, Kelli purposed in her heart to give back to ALA (the organization has given to her in many ways, including providing aide for her graduate studies in 2006 & 2007) by serving on the CSK Committee. The CSK award is given to African American authors and illustrators for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions annually. Within hours of this prayer, Kelli was approached by a CSK Committee member in the exhibit hall and asked to join!
If you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart! (Ps. 37:4) Kelli is currently employed by Farmington Public Schools, and will be entering her third year with the district in the fall. She was a K-8 school librarian for two years, and will be returning to the traditional classroom to teach 7th & 8th grade ESL & Science for the 2010-2011 school year. She has also worked at the Farmington Community Library for over 10 years in various departments, and now serves as an Adult Reference Librarian Substitute at the Farmington Branch.

The official day was Monday April 12. We all thank Clara for leading the way and setting the standard high.

| Bob D - Tennis Hero | | | Did you know that Bob Damesworth is a tennis hero? True story! Check this out from the US Tennis Association.... Prayer in the Art of Tennis Sunday, October 25, 2009 3:11 PM ET By Sue Levine, USTA.com Indian Wells, Calif. - It was a hard-fought battle to the 3.5 Senior USTA League National Championship for the Farmington Tennis Club. The team is out of Farmington, Michigan, and represents the Midwest Section. Team captain Jerry LeLito says it looked like the chances of getting to the National Championship were "slim and none, and slim left town". But Robert Damesworth knows how his team made it. He says it was an answered prayer. Damesworth is on the team. He says the team members all agreed they should pray for God’s favor and protection. So he volunteered to be the Team Chaplain. Each of the five teams competing for a trip to the finals had two wins and two losses. Damesworth says everything "had to line up perfectly for us to win". It all came down to one set. The team from Wisconsin had to lose for the Farmington Tennis Club to advance.
Most of the team went home before the deciding set, fearing it was a lost cause. But LeLito and Damesworth stayed to see it through. It looked bad for a while, with Wisconsin ahead 9-5 in the 3rd set tie-break. But then, Damesworth said, they couldn’t believe what was happening right before their own eyes. Wisconsin went down, with a final score of 13-11, sending the Farmington Tennis Club team to the National Championships. Some might call it luck. But the Team Chaplain knows better. Damesworth has no doubt it was a miracle because "the only variable was prayer".

| Amy - Top Olympic Swimmer | | | Our own Amy Kamm takes Olympic Medals - Swims faster than Michael Phelps!! Amy is fast in the pool - very fast. In fact, in the Butterfly she's even faster than Michael Phelps. Amy swam a 00:47.85 while Phelps could only manage a 00:50.58!! Now of course, Michael felt a need to show off, so he swam 100m to Amy's 50m, but who's looking at those sorts of details? So anyway, Amy took Gold in both the 50m Backstroke and the 50m Butterfly. She took Silver in both the 50m and the 100m Freestyle. Wow, that's a bunch of medals. | |
